Process information to discuss possible applications of superconductivity and the effects of those applications on computers, generators and motors and transmission of electricity through power grids

  • Computer chips – size limited by resistance heat, no heat is produced from a superconductor, allows it to be packed smaller and closer together, also faster with no heat
  • Generators/motors – stronger magnets, no energy loss in coil which could approach 100% efficiency, this would reduce cost and environmental impact, also smaller size/weight needed and would reduce need for thermal management
  • Energy transmission – remove energy loss due to resistance in wires, increase efficiency, transfer further with less repeaters, does not need to be stepped up which removes the need for transformers (large/expensive)
  • Energy storage – current flows indefinitely, energy is stored in field of superconducting magnet, can be retrieved efficiently
